This class will explore contemporary social issues and various mechanisms of challenging injustice. During this course students will:

Explore a variety of social issues (potential topics)
Explore the origins of social issues
Explore mechanisms that challenge injustice
Explore movements and local organizations that challenge injustice
Talk to experts in this field
Pick a social issue that matters to you
Create a mini documentary about your topic to be aired on your local public access channel or youtube

Lesson 1:
Issues of the Day

Issues of the Day

Define social issue
Give students a stack of magazines and news papers and have them identity social issues they find
Students and teacher brain storm a list of various social issues. List could include :
- Environmental Degradation
- Racism
- Poverty
- Immigration
- Challenges of Disability
- Sexism
- War
- Gun Violence
Discuss what makes each item on the list a social issue
Have students make a list of social issues that interest them
